Our Curriculum

At Larkrise Primary School we are committed to ensuring every child reaches their full potential, both academically and socially. We want our pupils to become ambitious, knowledgeable, articulate and emotionally intelligent individuals. Children will graduate from Larkrise Primary School with a genuine passion for learning, strong communication skills and a positive sense of identity.

The curriculum aims to grow curious and productive learners, who endeavour to think, question and seek new knowledge through a multidimensional learning experience that supports and challenges every child to:

1. Engage in deliberate practice to master knowledge and skills
Knowledge is critical to accessing a wealth of opportunities, making well-informed decisions and shaping personalities. Children engage in deliberate practice to master the required knowledge and skills to engage with the world in a meaningful way, and navigate varying contexts and challenges with confidence. We want children to thrive in meeting their personal ambitions and understand the value that life-long learning can have on an individual’s success. Differentiation is provided through scaffolds and constraints to ensure expectations are consistently high for every child. We celebrate the progress of every child yet we do not let this deviate our attention from the mastery of age-appropriate expectations.

2. Explore enriching experiences
Exploring broad and often first-hand experiences gives children a firm understanding of how and why things work and builds their confidence to approach new challenges. A commitment to offering a broad and balanced curriculum enables every child to flourish and ascertain where their passions and interests lie. Our curriculum covers all areas of the statutory National Curriculum and values all subjects. Through the teaching of the National Curriculum, children are offered a broad range of learning experiences, that enable progression of knowledge and skills.

3. Inspire joy in learning and reading
For children to excel and achieve their full potential they must be engaged and inspired daily. Children must be fascinated and inspired by the curriculum, so they are motivated to share discoveries, speak enthusiastically and independently choose to conduct research or read to further enhance their learning. We go over and above to underpin concepts within every area of the curriculum with demanding and engaging texts. We know that a well chosen text that is rich in language and ideas can inspire and make learning stick!

4. Grow character and meta-learning
We want our learners to not only be academically secure but also compassionate, resilient and able to build strong relationships with others. The broad experiences presented to our children enable them to develop a sense of identity as well as pride in themselves and their school. Every child is encouraged to understand how they learn so they can reflect, adapt, and proactively take steps to progress their knowledge and understanding. Identifying and responding to mistakes is viewed as a positive learning opportunity. Our school values (Curiosity, Happiness, Openness, Integrity, Courage and Endeavour - CHOICE)  and the British values underpin the curriculum and help children to develop character traits that enable them to make a positive contribution to our school community and wider society. 

5. Thrive with supportive partnerships

Parents, carers and the wider community are integral to the success of our curriculum and we seek opportunities to involve them in our learning journey. They are kept well-informed about the learning that takes place in the classroom, provided with opportunities to engage practically in their child’s education through curriculum events and 'Wow days', and are supported to continue learning beyond the school gates. By supporting together, our children can assert themselves as independent learners and joyfully drive their own and others’ learning forward.

English and Mathematics

We provide significant opportunities for pupils to master English and Mathematics. We believe mastery in these subjects is vital if children are to fully access a broad and balanced curriculum.

Understanding our World - Science, Geography, History, Religious Education and Languages

We develop our pupils' understanding of the world by building scientific, geographical and religious knowledge and skills. Pupils have the opportunity to learn French from year three onwards.

Creating and Inventing - Art and Design, Music, Design Technology and Computing
We want our pupils to be brilliant creators and inventors. Learning in Art and Design, Music, Design Technology and Computing provide rich opportunities for creativity and invention.

Sports, Health and Citizenship - Physical Education, PSHE, including health and relationships and Habits of Happiness

We want all our pupils to stay healthy, build strong friendships and make a positive contribution to society. We encourage every child to participate in sports to help boost self-esteem and confidence. Happiness is a habit at Larkrise, encouraged through regular opportunities for increased awareness, movement, gratitude and kindness.
